Yia Vang is the author of In Yer’s Kitchen: Memoir of a Hmong Daughter, her debut nonfiction work exploring the intersections of food, intimacy, and the generational relationship between mothers and daughters. The memoir received the Culture Award from the Page Turner Awards (2025), was a Book Award Finalist for the Page Turner Awards (2025), and earned a Bronze Nonfiction Book Award from the Nonfiction Authors Association (2025).

Blending Eros philosophy with grounded portrayals of Hmong family life, Vang’s writing examines feminine power, identity, and the subtle ways connection is formed, inherited, and restored. Her work centers on a woman’s way of knowing—its nuance, emotional intelligence, and deep relational sensitivity—inviting readers to reconsider lineage, belonging, and the interior world of desire.

Born in a refugee camp in Thailand after her family fled Laos following the Secret War, Vang was raised in Stockton, California in a working-class Hmong community. She later received her B.S. in Communication from the University of California, Davis.

Vang now lives between Philo, California and New York City. She is a writer with Soulmaker Press and continues to develop work at the intersection of intimacy, culture, and the Erotic. Her writing and teaching are devoted to creating conditions for human flourishing.
